Fan-o-phobia

Has there been some thing that you are worried about lately, something that might not seem too important that has been troubling you? ... Or that the very thought of it makes you shiver, tremble with fear or puts in the fear of god within you? Well ... I am facing one such thing of late. Somehow I have developed a fear of the fans, especially in cases where fans are a relatively lesser height, usually which I can touch easily with my palms or even elbows ... and even the ones that I can barely even touch by my fingers. This has not been without a reaon though. Recently I went to a relatives place where there was this combination of a fan being at lesser height and me being quite tall. After taking a bath (yeah ... I do take a bath ... in summers at least!) I switched on the fan, and raised my hands to wear a T-shirt. And suddenly I found something hitting my left thumb, hitting it really hard. Before the signal was sent to my brain so that I could realize what was happening, I put my h

Art of question paper leaks

(Following is based upon a real discussion which I had today morning) As I was making efforts to keep myself afloat in the swimming pool, I overheard some conversations - "Puraa paper pataa hota hai, wo to humein mil hi jaata hai ... tab bhi hum nahi padhte hain" . .. and so on The guy who did bulk of talking looked around 15 years old and seemed like quite a spoilt brat. I chipped in with some expert comments and questions - "Which board?" "Kisi bhi board ka" After a minute of chat I gathered that he had just given Class 10 exams in ICSE board and was planning to take science stream(PCM), and he studied in a school (say SKP). He had earlier managed to do the same at his previous school (say CRK). Inquisitively, I tried to gather more information on how he manages to get the paper "Bus kuch nahi, security guard ko paise do. 8th, 10th, 12th ke papers. Wo ek extra copy karaa leta hai. ICSE ke paper out karna sabse easy hai. Koi seal nahi hoti" &quo

A lesson

The Honda City brushed the vegetable laden cart, which was standing on side of a somewhat busy road. Down he got from the car, removed his goggles, headed towards the seemingly malnourished vendor and grabbed him by his collar. "Saale, tu khud ko samajhta kya hai. Sadak kya tere baap ki hai" "Saab, meri koi galti nahi ... Wo to aapki gaddi ..." "Saale, zabaan ladaata hai ... Teri to ..." Raaapppppppppppatttttt >--Slap No. # 1--< "Saab, lekin ..." Satttttttttttttttakkkkkkkk >--Slap No. # 2--< "Saab ..." "Aur aukaad mein reh ..." He grabbed the vendor by his collar, blurted out some words of which only the abuses were clearly audible and went back to his car to join his group of relatives, who were waiting for him to go for a shopping spree, all in awe of the command and control he had over the people.

Cycle

After a failed attempt at jogging, I roamed about aimlessly when an idea struck me to have a ride in a cycle, couple of which is lying in the “recreational area”. I was longing since long to ride a cycle sans motor. There was no particular reason for this feeling; it was that just I wanted to have a ride. The 2-3 km ride was a tiring experience, especially for one who is having this after a long time; but I was gleeing all along. As an infant, I loved going about in a tricycle. Then I became too big for it and got a cycle. After several attempts and many falls, I mastered the art. I used to flaunt it in front of my friends, who flaunted theirs. As I entered teens, the bicycle seemed smaller; so I got a bigger cycle. As years progressed, I learnt to ride a 2 wheeler. Now I started to find the bicycle too childish for my tastes. I tried to reason out why I should get a 2-wheeler to go to a particular place. Sometimes I succeeded to get it, and sometimes I didn’t and had to go around in

Road crossing blues

It was the peak hour in Bangalore. I just needed to cross the road and drop a cheque at an ATM. I expected to be back in 2 minutes. But it wasn’t going to be an easy journey. It was the 100 feet ring road in Koramangala at 8 PM on a weekday. People were returning after another mundane day at their office. There were bikes, cars, buses and more and more of the 3. The traffic signal (which is not usually followed) was a bit far away. So why was I supposed to spend those extra few minutes. So I just went with the shortcut. There were four stages. Two lanes while going and two while coming. So I began my journey. Stage 1: The vehicles were coming at full speed. I waited for more than two minutes, but wasn't able to make a first move. Then I decided " bahut ho gaya ... ab to cross kar ke hi rahunga ". So, there I went. But I was soon on back foot as I was nearly knocked down by a speeding car. He blurted some abuses at me which I couldn't hear due to clamoring of vehicles

Sarkaari Hospitals ka experience

One of my friends let us call him AK got admission into an IIM. Being a sarkari institute there are some conditions to be fulfilled. One of them is physical and mental fitness certificate (or sanity certificate!) from a civil surgeon or its equivalent. This entails rounds to one of the many sarkari hospitals, as the ones from private practitioner are not allowed. So began my not so long, yet a long journey through few government hospitals of the city for a work that was supposed to last few minutes. First was the Jaideva Institute of Cardiology. But there they declined stating that that is an autonomous institute. We left thinking that “Hadh hai … autonomous hua to kya hua … hai to sarkaari … and these stupid requirements of the Institute”. But we got the address of next location and continued our quest. Next location was Sanjay Gandhi hospital for accident. The doctor had gone for breakfast and we were told to wait for few minutes. We kept on bugging the receptionist/ nur

Kalti

The train was about to leave. I stared in the berth opposite to mine. There was a small kid of maybe 9-10 monthes, her cheeks slightly reddish, and he was wrapped in a pink woolen cloth. Maybe it would be apt to call her "gulabi golu". Accompanying her was her mother, a young lady in her 20s, maybe around halfway through, and her "mausi" (mother's sister), who might have been a year or two younger. The kid was cute, and it was no surprise that the ones accompanying the kid were beautiful. In no time I found myself playing with the kid. And meanwhile, I was having glimpses of her mausi and mother. It was probably the first occasion when there was some good looking lady near my seat in a journey. I thought this and smiled, though no one except me was aware why. and, then suddenly, the kids mausi talked to me, "BHAIYA, aap kidhar jaa rahe ho ?" "Kalti !", i thought to myself ...and continued my journey

Catch 22 situation

Of late i have been slightly injured in the region just below the chin (nothing serious though !) and have been wearing a bandage (the one which sticks on the skin like a tape), which is often too weak on my beard ! Doctor : You need to take care that the place of wound is protected from water ... and you need to shave because the bandage in not sticking coz of your beard Me : How can I save the place from water and get a shave, both at the same time. ... ... Somewhat reminds me of catch - 22 !

Injury : 24 hours later ...

It has been over 24 hours since a white bandage is adorning the part of my body that lies in the intersection of my chin and the neck. The injury was NOT a major one, but yes, i do have some concerns as I would have to live with this for a fortnight or so. Though it deserved a couple of stitches, but I managed not to get it, with the fear of stitches due to lack of prior experience being one of the reasons coupled with some laziness with me showing to doctor 12 hours later being another. (stiches need to be there within 4-6 hours of injury) Now I have to be extremely careful while laughing and usually I place one of my palms on the bandage to have a laugh. Now smiling is also a sort of muscle challenging task. Also I can do less of talking, which is quite a challenging job. I can now eat very slowly. This was one of the reasons, I could eat less in yeterday's pizza party. The quantity of food intake has reduced to 49.96 % of original (a b - school student estimate, where I am not
