Some random movie reviews

1 holiday, 6 movies!

8 movies in a span of last 32 hours!

Huh …

That was too much … A mixture of good cinema and utter crap … of hardcore realism to escapism … of typical and offbeat … of some popular to some watched by a handful … a mixture of many differents actually!

Just writing a purposeless random review of all of these –

1. 1. City of god – Excellent!

Brazilian movie, at best understood with help of subtitles and visuals. An excellent depiction of a Brazilian slum, where kids having guns is not an uncommon site; where crime is a way of life.

2. 2. Love actually – Beautiful!

A mushy love story … rather many mushy love stories …Karan Johar types, if some parallel has to be drawn to our desi phillum industry … with everyone from a school kid to Britain’s prime minister is falling in love.

A good watch nevertheless!

3. 3. Jhom Barabar Jhoom – Crap

Only good things are nice songs … but not that interesting with random jhoom baraabar jhoom title tracks thrown in … Also lead female actors look hot!

4. 4. TaRaRumPum – Utter Crap!

… No actual reason for watching it … just aise hi dekh liya forward kar ke … An awful wanna be ‘Life is Beautiful ‘kind of movie!

5. 5. Dhamaal – Time pass

Time pass Escapist cinema with all kinds of crazy stuff thrown in. Absence of songs helps!

6. 6. Ace Ventura Pet Detective – Time Pass Slapstick

Escapist time pass cinema, with typical Jim Carrey humor.

7. 7. Dharm – Excellent Cinema

A typical ‘art’ movie, slow and sensitive kind of … only to be seen it in a ‘frame of mind’ to watch such cinema.

Well researched and well presented, with some excellent performance thrown in. It seems truly ‘Oscar’ nomination kind of movie.

Although, though provoking … it is likely to be seen a quite boring or too slow movie.

8. 8. Loins of Punjab presents –Damn Interesting satire

A recent release and the only one in the lot to be viewed on big screen.

A sneak peek into lives of NRIs. An excellent satire on their lifestyles and talent hunt shows (Indian Idol types!). Beneath this all there are other aspects portrayed quite effectively. Be it high class ‘socialites’ with all their phonyness (portrayed by Shabana Azmi, playing the ‘bitchy’ Rrita), or portraying typical mindset where we wish everyone to be a doctor or engineer, or 10-15 relatives coming up to ‘encourage’ a participant in the talent hunt or a typical Punjabi ‘wanna be dudes’ duo or behind the screen jugaad, or Indians wishing to squeeze the maximum out of US hotels!

Bole to buree tarah le li gayee hai sub type ke ’characters’ ki!!

A good watch for those who love satire (this 90 minute movie is largely in angrezi)

So much for a day and a half ... huh !!!!!

  4. Saw another 'sort of' different movie "Chain kuli ki main kuli ki" (Rahul Bose!).

It is about a 13 year orphan who gets Kapil's bat used in 1983 world cup ... and does wonder for few international matches with that 'magic' bat ...

    Goodish kind of movie !

    Specially liked the line -

"Magic to hamaare andar hota hai,.. hamaare vishwaas mein hota hai"

The Shrill Voice

There was a shrill voice within, Longing to see the light With each passing moment It grew louder and bright. It didn't stay there for long As louder became its screams, Sounds of half-fulfilled wishes And long abandoned dreams. And then I asked those troubling voices What is your wish and what do you want? It spoke, and I replied -Y our wishes are unreasonable, And asking something that I can't.

Downhill

That was the last of the drink left, and he gulped it down. They had finished it all. Had there been more booze, they would have gulped it too. It was around 3 in night, but then there was still a lot left in the night. The lights in the city below had faded along ago but it still looked beautiful. After all, the beauty of the city was not dependent on light. And from this place, located uphill somewhere amidst wilderness, human settlement was the last thing that could have come to their mind. But in the end, that was where they all had to go to. They walked back to their cars and planned to head back to their hotel, which was some 20 km away at Shimla. They were a group of 7 people - all college friends out on a trip to Shimla to celebrate the last extended weekend before getting out of the B-School. One of the guys had a car and all crammed into it and headed for the vacation. The owner of the car, Chandru as the fondly called him was too drunk to drive. But he had often been too...

The road to nowhere

Everything seems to be at crossroads ... but I dunno where r these roads heading towards. I am moving on with the traffic, knowing that others are going toward somewhere, where I don't want to go ... yet I am trying to be in sync with it I wish to to stop my car and see if I am headed in right direction, but I don't have guts to do so on an expressway where everyone is speeding by I am just hoping that my car doesn't run out of fuel or break down while on a way I am scared to take an U turn, but am scared that I would be knocked down by a speeding vehicle I am scared to drive slowly, because I am scared to be left behind I am bound by the rules of the game, I wish to break them but I dare not do it on this expressway Something is wrong, maybe that's obvious ... but the obvious is often not too obvious. The problem is that I dunno what really the problem is !!!

The parrot

"You shall have your freedom", Said the generous master, As he opened the cage. The parrot was delighted, As he suppressed his joy, And controlled his rage, For so long he had wished, To be free and be Up in the sky. At last his chance had come, And towards his destiny, He shall fly. And then the realization dawned, That his wings were clipped, How shall now he even try?

Defiance

In the penultimate moment, he just waited. A guillotine will kiss his neck, and is speed would be enough to separate it from rest of the body. This process will be repeated eleven times, ten times after his head had already been chopped off. But then, that was the law ever since those bearded men who believed themselves to be messengers of god took over few years ago. He was guilty on many counts, punishment for each ranging from few lashes to being executed few timed over. He was one of the few individuals who was given a chance to plead in public to escape this gruesome end. This was a special privilege given to him by the ruler, so that he begs for forgiveness for all his sins, be blessed with atonement and then back to life as normal ... normal as per as what they thought. That, the ruler thought would serve as a precedent and inspire people to follow their line of thought. For the one last time he was asked, "You still have the time. Do you wish to come back to the life of a...
