Art of watching a movie

Everyone has some idiosyncrasies when it comes to watching a movie. I tried to list some of mine in this post --

Some random movie watching habits, that belong exclusively to me
(Idea for this write up has been blatantly stolen from other blogs!) -->

  • There are few movies I get extremely excited about (e.g. TZP, Jodha Akbar, RDB), and there have been few I have always been excited about ever since I saw them ... and people have been bored of hearing me recommend that movie to others (e.g. TZP, RDB, The Truman show, Forrest Gump, ... even Aaap ka surror!)
  • While watching movies (esp. angrezi ones!) on my lappy, I often use Wikipedia and IMDB as reference (esp. to know where the story is headed for) ... Even with such references, I could understand only half the movie Memento!
  • I love reading movie reviews. Few of the ones I follow are Taran Adarsh ke crappy reviews, Rajeev Masand (who is somewhat reliable) ... and few reviews occasionally in TOI, HT, Rediff, and other random websites. After all it is my review that matters!
  • I like to pass expert comments during most of the movies. I prefer not listening to other people's comment. I like telling trivia here and there. There have been cases when people have moved from my neighboring seat to some other location where they can see the movie sans comments!
  • I usually hate noises in the cinema hall ... unless I am the source! But shouting with the junta in movies like Chak De or Lagaan ... or even LOC Kargil have been awesome experiences!
  • There have been cases when I may have said "kya bakwaas", "pakaau", "jhilaaaaau", "yaaaaaaaaah", "nahiiiiiiiiiiiii" and similar words >143 times (> 1 per minute!) during a movie (e.g. Welcome, 10000 BC)
  • Some movies are watched only due to 'fun' of watching it, and not because of desire to watch good cinema (e.g. Aaap ka surroor - the moviee - the real luv story, when we went to cinema with a cap!)
  • I am a pop-corn guzzler ... I share it with others purely out of courtesy, usually with a heavy heart!
  • I laugh at 640 dB if there is something I find something really funny in a movie.
  • I often spend time in discussing a lot of stuff about the movie (apart from movie ke contents) ... which can be classified under 'trivia' section .. and I love to bore people with it!
  • I hate missing trailers and advertisements before the movie ... I usually speculate which trailer can we expect today before a movie ... and have often been right!

Comments

  2. Arey, bhavnaaon ko samjho!

Ear damage is not as much a consequence of my laughing, as it is of my incessant comments!

Gunaho ka Devta

During last few days, I had a privilege of reading one of the most accomplished works in Hindi literature - "Gunaho ka Devta" . This was the first time I read a Hindi novel after being highly recommended by 2-3 different people. I was kind of compelled to read it after initial 15-20 pages which were largely in an unfamiliar territory of Hindi literature! It is a novel set probably more than 50 years ago, and is a philosophical cum love story. It is one of those books where I can't be sure about how I feel. It is an excellently written book ( ... or maybe it was the first time I was reading a Hindi book ... but probably this is not the explanation!) , with the entire spectrum of emotions thrown in generous doses. The scenes are recreated almost poetically, emotions mentioned perfectly. But at times I am tempted to question basic assumptions of it all. At times I am tempted to say that he is preaching many things which I don't believe in, which I find improper, but the...

Om (Ctrl C-Ctrl V) Om

This is a case study in how to make a presentation or a project report in a B school. This is a study of how to copy-paste from various sources (at the same time acknowledging it) and presenting a complete package with some excellent glossy packaging! For example, the movie - Om Shanti Om had the basic template from the movie Karz. The main attraction was inspired from John Jhonny Janardan’s title track. There were generous doses of movies like Madhumati and Karan Arjun. Some traces of Maine Pyaar Kiya, some Rajnikanth movies, some Jeetendra movies, many 70s ki movies, many actors ka style and lives etc. etc. were present. Thrown in was some amount of nostalgia in order to emotionally connect with the audience. Some quotes were from various sources (The one mentioned 3-4 times was from “The Alchemist” –“ When you want something, the whole Universe conspires to help you realize your desire”!) And then all the ingredients need to be mixed in right proportion so as not to have an ...

The Shrill Voice

There was a shrill voice within, Longing to see the light With each passing moment It grew louder and bright. It didn't stay there for long As louder became its screams, Sounds of half-fulfilled wishes And long abandoned dreams. And then I asked those troubling voices What is your wish and what do you want? It spoke, and I replied -Y our wishes are unreasonable, And asking something that I can't.

Downhill

That was the last of the drink left, and he gulped it down. They had finished it all. Had there been more booze, they would have gulped it too. It was around 3 in night, but then there was still a lot left in the night. The lights in the city below had faded along ago but it still looked beautiful. After all, the beauty of the city was not dependent on light. And from this place, located uphill somewhere amidst wilderness, human settlement was the last thing that could have come to their mind. But in the end, that was where they all had to go to. They walked back to their cars and planned to head back to their hotel, which was some 20 km away at Shimla. They were a group of 7 people - all college friends out on a trip to Shimla to celebrate the last extended weekend before getting out of the B-School. One of the guys had a car and all crammed into it and headed for the vacation. The owner of the car, Chandru as the fondly called him was too drunk to drive. But he had often been too...

The road to nowhere

Everything seems to be at crossroads ... but I dunno where r these roads heading towards. I am moving on with the traffic, knowing that others are going toward somewhere, where I don't want to go ... yet I am trying to be in sync with it I wish to to stop my car and see if I am headed in right direction, but I don't have guts to do so on an expressway where everyone is speeding by I am just hoping that my car doesn't run out of fuel or break down while on a way I am scared to take an U turn, but am scared that I would be knocked down by a speeding vehicle I am scared to drive slowly, because I am scared to be left behind I am bound by the rules of the game, I wish to break them but I dare not do it on this expressway Something is wrong, maybe that's obvious ... but the obvious is often not too obvious. The problem is that I dunno what really the problem is !!!
